Abstract
The choice of 2013 as the Year of Statistics is due to two important historical events. One is the publication of James Bernoulli’s influential book The Art of Guessing (Bernoulli 1713) three hundred years ago, and the second is the publication of Bayes’s paper two hundred and fifty years before the Year of Statistics.
These two works, published after the death of their authors, undoubtedly had a tremendous impact on the theory of statistics and probability. So much so that Hald (2007) considers the period of growth and development of statistics from Bernoulli to Fisher.
