To calculate point estimates such as moment estimates and maximum likelihood estimates and interval estimates such as classical confidence intervals, shortest confidence intervals, unbiased confidence intervals, and Bayesian confidence intervals with the highest posterior density (HPD), we may encounter equations that must be solved numerically. In this paper, numerical methods for solving such equations are studied in the form of the statistical software S-PLUS. Various examples are provided to illustrate the methods described.
