Abstract
In many different scientific fields, measurements are directional. For example, a biologist might measure the direction of a bird's flight or the direction of an animal's movement. In this article, we first introduce circular data, and then present a method for calculating the mean direction, as well as the dispersion and higher-order moments associated with circular data. Many circular data problems are often not available in simple analytical forms, and computer software related to the use of these methods is necessary; at the end of this article, the CircStats function package in R and Matlab software is presented for analyzing directional data sets.
